But this relatively new focus comes with many challenges, such as determining the best characteristics and features of an electric car or, for example, the ideal regions in which to launch a new model. This article covers some of those challenges and describes how information on EV charging infrastructure can help to answer several key questions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Challenges in design and development<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Electric cars are not bound to the same restrictions that cars with combustion engines are facing. There is no central powertrain, which means there\u00a0<a style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); line-height: var( --e-global-typography-text-line-height );\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/simcenter\/the-5-challenges-affecting-electric-vehicle-design-and-development\/\">is more freedom for engineers<\/a>. This allows for a lot of creativity and innovation in its designs, but it also means that the OEM needs to start from scratch and has to consider a different set of challenges, such as battery and plug placement. The approach needs to be human-centric in order to promote EV adoption.\u00a0<a style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); line-height: var( --e-global-typography-text-line-height );\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/automotive-and-assembly\/our-insights\/rewiring-car-electronics-and-software-architecture-for-the-roaring-2020s\">McKinsey<\/a>\u00a0argues that software will play a huge role in differentiating the winners from the losers.<\/p>\n<p>Despite rapidly growing consumers\u2019 acceptance, the wider adoption of electric driving still faces significant challenges, including range anxiety, charging station availability, high purchasing costs and charging time. Many players in the industry, such as car OEMs, charger hardware manufacturers, charge point operators (CPO) and electric mobility service providers (EMSP) are working hard to address their part in these challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Growing the charging network (specifically the number of fast chargers), utilising vehicle-to-grid (V2G) to decrease charging costs, no touch charging, and payments through Plug&amp;Charge (PnC) and Autocharge all help to improve the EV experience of drivers and take away consumers\u2019 concerns.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e7413ef e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"e7413ef\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-05711cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"05711cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1440\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.effectiva.nl\/eco-movement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/TomTom.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-1508\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.effectiva.nl\/eco-movement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/TomTom.jpeg 1440w, https:\/\/dev.effectiva.nl\/eco-movement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/TomTom-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/dev.effectiva.nl\/eco-movement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/TomTom-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/dev.effectiva.nl\/eco-movement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/TomTom-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f40fe0b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"f40fe0b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b19004c e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"b19004c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf43f31 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cf43f31\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>At the same time,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/autocrypt.io\/how-do-automotive-oem-transition-to-ev-manufacturing\/\">car OEMs must ensure that their vehicles have the capability<\/a>\u00a0to adopt these types of technologies, from seamless ultra-fast charging at 800 volt chargers to feeding the grid with electricity from the car\u2019s battery. On top of that, they need to manage the thermal characteristics of the vehicle: making sure the batteries do not overheat; warming the car interior\u00a0 so passengers are not too cold; and pre-heating the battery to allow for faster charging. The huge shift from combustion engines to EV will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.robeco.com\/en\/insights\/2021\/07\/what-will-it-take-for-carmakers-survive-the-shift-to-electrification.html\">require large investments<\/a>\u00a0from the carmakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is why it is vital to develop an effective strategy for allocating R&amp;D resources and efforts. Insights into the (development of the) charging infrastructure are key in order to make data-driven decisions while forming the best approach. Both a thorough understanding of the development of the number of charging stations in various regions and information about charging stations\u2019 capabilities and specifications are needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eco-Movement\u2019s data and reporting solution aim to provide exactly these types of insights.
